To better understand Form & Function, we encourage everyone interested in the German Shorthaired Pointer to watch our breed in the field at Trials and Hunt Tests. Bred as an all purpose Gundog, this breed was meant to perform multiple tasks, sometimes in a single day. Tasks such as: find game – both fur and feather, hold large animals at bay, point, land or water retrieve, track and locate wounded game, stand its ground if faced with large predatory game or dispatch with smaller ones upon command. Hence “…a versatile hunter, an all purpose gun dog capable of high performance in (over all kinds of terrain) field and water”. In the Conformation ring the GSP should reflect these basic characteristics.
