Health Clinics

The Health and Welfare Committee, (H&W) is pleased to offer the following health clinics/activities

Wednesday, May 8 (1pm-4pm)

There will be a H&W Discussion Panel from 4:30PM to 5:30PM providing members an opportunity to ask questions and give feedback to the Committee. All NSS attendees are encouraged to attend this discussion and share their thoughts, concerns, suggestions.


$140 CONE Degeneration Test with OFA Submission & Coat Color Panel

This test includes the Basic Coat Color Panel including MC1R, Agouti, Brown, Dilute, Dominant Black and Piebald; Cone Degeneration including CDF1 and CD2 variants; Submission of Cone Degeneration results to OFA database.

The cheek swab kits and forms will be available on May 8th. Your dog should not have had anything to eat or drink 60 minutes prior to using the cheek swabs.

Please note, in order to properly identify your dog on all forms you will need to have:

  1. Dog’s registered name
  2. Registration number
  3. Microchip information

Once completed Shelley Schwerdt will mail the samples to UC Davis Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Contact Shelley with any questions.

$35 OFA Eye Certification Exam

Dr. Robert Peiffer will be performing eye examinations to detect inherited eye diseases such as cataracts, progressive rental atrophy, and rental dysplasia. As eye drops are applied to dilate the pupils, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment.

GSPCA/CHIC OFA DNA Repository Sample Collection

The H&W Committee will be collecting blood samples to add to the existing CHIC DNA/GSP blood repository. The repository has established a quick release process to provide samples for Canine Health Foundation sponsored research as directed by the GSPCA. The cost of this is free for the first 100 dogs to participate at the NSS.

Dr. Renee Lara and Dr. Gary McNeil will be drawing blood samples on May 8th from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.
