2020 GSPCA election

Helen JoyceSoutheast Director: Helen Joyce [email Helen]

I am honored to be nominated as a candidate for the Southeast Director position and would like to thank the Nominating Committee for this nomination. I would like to share a little about myself.

I have had purebred dogs all my life, and when I was young, our family had Pulik, and we were fortunate to be next door neighbors with the preeminent breeder/judge, Ellen Charles, who introduced to that wonderful breed.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, I moved south after law school, where I completed a two year federal judicial clerkship in Mobile, AL. After the conclusion the clerkship, I stayed in Mobile, working as a lawyer with a law firm, practicing in areas of civil litigation and also handled some real estate matters. After practicing law, I have continued with real estate projects including rental properties and buying and fixing up houses in need. I had decided it was the right time to get a dog, and while out on a walk, I saw this beautiful dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and had to meet her and the owner to learn more about the breed. I researched the breed and decided that I wanted to get one. So in 2003, I got my first GSP, Elwood, and have never looked back. I have bred/co-bred three litters, and have been blessed with wonderful breeder mentors and co-owners. I have participated in Conformation, Rally, agility, obedience, and work in the field, and am fortunate to live on some acreage that the dogs can run on. I have been fortunate to have dogs that reached the Top 25.

As for involvement with clubs, I am currently a member and past President of the Mobile Bay Dog Training Club, which puts on an Agility trial as well as Obedience/Rally trial annually. I am also currently a member of the Mobile Kennel Club and have been a sponsor of groups at its shows for a number of years as well as breed prizes for GSPs. I have also been a club supporter and have donated and sponsored trophies to several different clubs. As for parent clubs, I am also a member of the National Redbone Coonhound Club in addition to the GSPCA. I have attended the annual meeting and the delegates meeting of the GSPCA.

As I also own Redbone Coonhounds, I am a member of the National Redbone Coonhound Club, the parent club, and have served as Secretary. I helped the Club become recognized as the AKC parent club starting with taking the steps to form the Club as a legal entity. Additionally, I worked towards gaining approval by the AKC which included holding an “A” Match where I handled all the paperwork and coordinated the event to a successful conclusion. I believe my experience holding several different positions within a club gives me a unique perspective to be a productive member of the Board of Directors. I've had to work with many other club members, coordinating closely, which has given me a lot of experience I can bring to the table.

As a lawyer, I have engaged in the practice of law where I have formed legal entities, drafted bylaws and operating agreements, prepared various legal documents, and worked on dispute resolutions, as well as advised individuals and entities related to these areas, and this background has enabled me to contribute to the clubs as needed.  Additionally, I have served as a member of the City of Semmes Planning Commission for over 6 years and for the last 2 years, I have been Chair of the Planning Commission which involves running the Planning Commission meetings, but also public hearings and making sure that the public and members of the Commission have an opportunity to be heard with regards to the business of the Commission.  Important in this is communication, whether between the Board and the membership, but also amongst members. As the director for the Southeast, I would stress communication with the members and encourage their engagement with the Club and Club sponsored activities.

If elected, I will be a strong advocate for the Southeast region and its membership. I appreciate your support in this election.
