2017 GSPCA election

President: Terry Chandler [email Terry]

I would like to begin my biography with a sincere thank you to the members of the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America for entrusting me with the position of President for the last five years. It is truly an honor. Since I have served as President, this Board of Directors has worked on and accomplished some amazing things. From encouraging the majority of the sporting dog clubs to support us in ending the Q registry, to completing our Illustrated Standard, the making a bronze GSP and placing it in the front of the Bird Dog Hall of Fame, completing a member Code of Ethics to only name a few. It has been a pleasure working with such a wonderful group of people that we are so blessed to have on our Board. I am truly thankful!

For those of you who do not know me, here is some background on myself. I grew up in Roswell New Mexico and I have lived in New Mexico all of my life. I come from a family of farmers and ranchers. After attending high school in Roswell I moved to Las Cruces, NM to attend college at New Mexico State University and that is where I reside today. I have been lucky enough to have been married to my wife Janet for 37 years.  I have three children, Terry II, Kristina, and Ashley. I have five lovely grandchildren. My background is in business, marketing, and Animal Science.

I grew up hunting and fishing the prairies and mountains of New Mexico. My brother gave me my first German Shorthair when I was 16. I fell in love with the breed. I had no idea at that time that the rest of my life and resources would be directed towards GSP’s. I began showing my GSP’s in 1972 and I attended my first National Specialty show in 1974. I soon found out that my “field” bred GSP’s were not going to win in the ring, so began my quest for some “show quality” breeding. After acquiring several dogs and enjoying a fair amount of success in the show ring I became involved in field trialing. I soon learned that most of my dogs were not going to be competitive in the field. Thus began my “lifelong” quest of breeding Dual Champion GSP’s. My wife, daughter, granddaughter and I have developed our bloodline of GSP’s under the kennel name of Rugerheim. We have finished several Dual Champions and our breeding program is always geared towards that goal. After working for several Fortune 500 companies I decided that I loved field trialing so much that I wanted to do it full time. The only way I could do that was to become a Professional Trainer. This I did 32 years ago, and it has truly been a wonderful life long adventure!

In my tenure with the breed I have truly enjoyed serving on numerous National committees. I served on the National Show Committee for 14 years, 12 of those years as Chairman. I have also chaired a National Specialty Show. I assisted Charlie Blackbourn in the developing of the field National Amateur Gun Dog Championship of which I served on the committee of that event for 8 years. I also served as Chairman for one of those events. I am also the Representative for the GSPCA for the National Bird Dog Museum. On a local level, I am one of the founding members of the GSP Club of Las Cruces which we started in 1974. I have served as an officer or board member of that club since its inception. I have also been a member of the El Paso Del Norte GSP Club since 1975 and I have been an officer or a Board member of that club to this date.

I cannot begin to describe the love I have for our breed and the sport of dogs. I have competed, exhibited, and judged in many venues such as hunt tests, field trials, and conformation showing. I would compete in many more activities if I had the time. I love anything that has to do with dogs. I would be honored to serve as your President of the GSPCA for another term. If you choose to vote for me, I can promise you several things. First of all I will continue working as hard for this breed as I possibly can. I will always try to make decisions that are best for the breed, and never for any special interest. And last of all, I will do my VERY BEST to assure that all of our events are fair and equal to everyone who decides to participate in them. My door is always open to any member of this club to e-mail or telephone me. I am ALWAYS available and willing to talk about any issue within this club.

Thank you,

Terry Chandler, Sr.
